“Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.”

 – Luke 2:38

I hope you and your family had a blessed Christmas Day. According to the Christian Year or Seasons of the Church Year, we are in the season of Christmas. Christmas lasts 12 days, from Christmas Day until Epiphany, which is January 6, 2024. During this season, we are celebrating the birth of Christ, the arrival of the shepherds as they visited Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, and anticipate the arrival of the Wise Men on the day of Epiphany.

When I was growing up, we celebrated the Christmas season and kept our decorations up through Epiphany. I like celebrating the Christmas season rather than celebrating only one or two days. It gives me the opportunity to experience more deeply the hope and joy of the season as I reflect on all the events surrounding Jesus’ birth. Once the presents have been opened, it gives me time to rest in God’s love as I enjoy our lighted Christmas tree, other decorations, and continue to listen to Christmas songs. The days after Christmas Day are a time I am reminded to slow down. I am reminded of what really matters in life as I give thanks to God, rest in God’s presence, and spend time with family.

I hope you will take time to experience fully the season of Christmas. The words of Simeon come to mind as Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple on the eighth day according to the Law. Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying:

Anna, a prophetess, never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. When she saw Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, “she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” – Luke 2:38

May we, like Simeon and Anna, give praise and thanks to God for the precious gift of salvation in Jesus Christ.
